Markel Corporation UK Summer Internship Program

An internship abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your collegiate career. Markel Corporation is offering two rising Seniors of Virginia Tech an outstanding opportunity to work for Markel International for eight weeks during the summer of 2007. Markel International Limited is the London based subsidiary for the international operations of Markel Corporation, (www.markelcorp.com), the international property and casualty insurance group headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. We sell specialty insurance products and programs to a variety of niche markets and believe that our specialty product focus and niche market strategy enable us to develop expertise and specialized market knowledge. We seek to differentiate ourselves from competitors by reason of our expertise, service, continuity and other value-based considerations. Our financial goals are to earn consistent underwriting profits and superior investment returns to build shareholder value (NYSE: MKL). Markel International operates in the UK through two commercial entities. Markel International Insurance Company Limited (MIICL), its London based insurance company, operates in the London company market, while Markel Syndicate 3000 is its Lloyd’s 100 per cent owned corporate syndicate.
The Program
Location: London, England – Markel International Headquarters
Timeframe: The internship will last 8 weeks from June 4 – July 27, 2007. The first two weeks will be spent in our Glen Allen, Virginia headquarters.
General Overview: Summer Interns receive extensive on-the-job training, attend developmental workshops, and work on projects that directly affect Markel International’s business. Summer Interns are expected to successfully complete assigned projects, which are designed to develop and enhance critical thinking, administrative, problem solving and analytical skills.

Minimum Qualifications
- 3.25 GPA
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Finance or Accounting at Virginia Tech
- Interest in the property and casualty profession and in a business leadership career
- Demonstrated technical and analytical skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with professionals at all levels
Compensation
- $5,000.00 for the eight weeks
- Fully paid corporate housing (meals not included)
- Flights and transfers to and from London
