The European Approach to Management

Program Details

Study Abroad in France: The European Approach to Management is a unique opportunity for you to study abroad. You will study Business and French for 28 days (June 14 - July 10, 2010 approximate dates) in Evry, a suburb of Paris. The program consists of an overview of the French and European perspectives on Management as well as introductory or advanced French classes. You do not need to have studied French to participate in this program.

Students will enroll in one of 3 tracks: International Management, Designing Games, or Information Technology and will take track-specific classes along with French language and culture for approximately 28 days in Evry, a suburb of Paris. The program consists of an overview of the French and European perspectives on management, introductory or advanced French, and briefings on French and European social, economic, and political systems. Classes are in English; students do not need to have previously studied French to participate in this program. The program takes place at the Telecom & Management Sudparis, a prestigious business and engineering school with an information technology and telecommunications focus.


INSTRUCTORS

Reed Kennedy is an instructor of Management at Virginia Tech. In addition to Mr. Kennedy who will be the supervising professor, individual classes will be taught (in English) by faculty members from Telecomm and Management SudParis.

This is a tentative program schedule

Week1
Orientation and introduction to the French and European political, economic and social context; placement tests in French; introduction to Europe and its institutions.

National Festival of Music in Paris, Fete de la Musique

Weekend: guided tour of Paris and immersion in Paris life.

Week 2
Introduction to cultural differences and to intercultural management in the morning; French course in the afternoon.

Weekend: trip to the Loire valley, Leonardo Da Vinci's house, and the castles of the Loire valley.

Week 3
Introduction to the European Approach to Management in the morning; French course in the afternoon. Weekend: trip to French Brittany (Mont Saint Michel, Saint Malo, and Normandy beaches).

Visit to GE Medical Systems. Visit to Palace of Versailles.

Week 4
Introduction to the European Approach to Management in the morning; French course in the afternoon.

Day trip to Mercier Champagne vineyard and winery and Rheims Cathedral..

Weekend
Return home or stay for Bastille Day (July 14) festivities in Paris. Students may stay in dorm room free of charge the weekend following the end of the program.

Life at Telecomm School of Management
Live in the on-campus student housing (single room with private bath, mini-fridge and internet connection).

Daily meals at campus cafeteria (great food).
